Vijay Iyer live at the Purcell Room, South Bank with special guest Talvin Singh on tabla. Support from Lars Danielsson & Leszek Możdżer. Catch Vijay Iyer and Lars Danielsson & Leszek Możdżer on Spotify.
Wow! Great show! Vijay Iyer put on a fabulous set despite people walking out after each song… Seriously, WTF!?! Talvin Singh joined Vijay on tabla for the last two tracks. The last of which, a Stevie Wonder cover, was truly exemplary. Such synergy! I was fortunate enough to photograph them during the soundcheck - which was the first time they had ever played together, but you would never have known! I can’t wait to see Vijay return someday with a trio or quartet. He really shines when playing with others. That’s not to say that his solo work is anything to sneeze at. On the contrary, it was beyond impressive!
Support came from a dynamic, expressive duo: Leszek Możdżer (Pole) & Lars Danielsson (Swede). Fantastic stuff. They earned the encore! Lars must be one of the most expressive double bassists I’ve ever seen. They had a lot of fun feeding off each other. Tight. Możdżer appears to be somewhat of a celebrity - signing autographs with Polish expats after the show…
Movember has begun… The idea is to raise awareness of the fight against Prostate Cancer. Show your support: Donate or sport your own!

Oorutaichi - the eclectic solo Japanese musician - live at Kings Place as part of the London International Festival of Exploratory Music (LIFEM09) this evening…
This eclectic solo Japanese musician put on a great little set this evening. I’ve been to Kings Place twice now, and it’s not the most atmospheric of venues in which to perform - especially considering there is really no sort of warm-up support act(s), drink, etc… Oorutaichi’s music perhaps most closely resembles ‘The Milk of Human Kindness’ Caribou, with more African or perhaps Dancehall beats behind it. And a little more eclectic and out there. Really fun stuff. Looking forward to hearing his album…
