We are already involved in a massive, unplanned planetary experiment. We should not begin yet another planetary experiment in the hope that it will somehow magically cancel out the effects of the one we already have Al Gore on geoengineering

“the CLOUD” observation deck. Proposal for the London 2012 Olympics. What are the chances they’ll actually allow cycling?

“The CLOUD proposes an entirely new form of observation deck, connecting visitors to both the whole of London and the whole of the world, immersing them in euphoric gusts of weather and digital data. Each individual footstep on the ascent to the CLOUD participates in a vast collective energy-harvesting effort. Everyone around the world can contribute to the Cloud - whether by visiting or by sponsoring an LED, helping to keep the London lamp aflame”

Semipalatinsk Nuclear Polygon, Kazakhstan. A nuclear scientist uses a geiger counter to test radiation levels at the site of the first surface atomic explosion (2009.01.06)

“60 years ago, the Soviet Union detonated its first nuclear weapon, nicknamed “First Lightning”, at a test facility on the steppe of northeast Kazakhstan (formerly the Kazakh SSR). The test site, named the Semipalatinsk Polygon, would go on to host 456 atomic explosions over its 40-year existence. Residents in the surrounding area became unwitting guinea pigs, exposed to the aftereffects of the bombs both intentionally and unintentionally. The radiation has silently devastated three generations of people in Kazakhstan - the total number affected is thought to be more than one million - creating health problems ranging from thyroid diseases, cancer, birth defects, deformities, premature aging, and cardiovascular diseases. Life expectancy in the area is seven years less than the national average of Kazakhstan” - The Big Picture. Photography by Ed Ou

Honda EV-N, an electric car complete with solar power and a portable Honda U3-X (electric unicycle ala Segway)… And of course, they’ve designed them both nice and small so that when we get fat from all the lack of excercise, we won’t fit until we… er… excercise a little more!

“Energy Aware Clock” by Loove Broms, Karin Ehrnberger, Sara Ilstedt Hjelm, Erika Lundell and Jin Moen. Designed to make you aware of your daily energy consumption. Aesthetically, I’d like it to be a little thinner, but a nice idea…

Wind Knitting Factory by Merel Karhof.

“With the power of the wind, a knitting machine knits from the outside towards the inside of the building. The knitted material is harvested from time to time and rounded-off in individually packaged scarves. Each scarf has its own label which tells you in how much time it has been knitted and on which date.”

Cycle Hire scheme due May 2010, Central London. Modelled on the (un)successful Vélib scheme in Paris

The Parisian stats sound pretty bad: 20 000 bikes, 7 800 missing, 11 600 vandalised. But Eric Britton, a Parisian Ph.D. level economist, put some perspective on the matter: “The figures mean an average of around 15 thefts a day out of 80,000 daily uses. It’s like skinning a knee.”

Flygbussarna’s anti-car campaign 50 cars or 1 bus…. Every day thousands of cars are driven to and from Swedish airports. Every car holds only 1,2 persons on average which is to be compared with the Airport Coach that takes over 50. Needless to say, this makes no sense whatsoever from an environmental standpoint. To highlight this, an enormous bus was built out of 50 cars on the side of the highway to the airport. On the website, a live camera not only shows the installation 24/7 but also analyses the image and tracks each and every car going by. This data is then being used to highlight just how much emission we could save just by going by bus instead. Watch the video.

GeoBulb™ LED Light Bulb by C.Crane. A 60-watt direct replacement bulb that uses less than 8-watt! Same size, same fixture, puts out more light. Pricey, but let’s drink to the economy of scale!

You may call me an agnostic, but I do not share the crusading spirit of the professional atheist whose fervor is mostly due to a painful act of liberation from the fetters of religious indoctrination received in youth
