“The record deals with my grandpa Sigvard Nilsson who was a smallholder in Degernäs, Västerbotten. At the time, the Swedish government had bereft the Norrland (Northern part of Sweden) of wood - it’s most valuable resource. They had funded the industrialization of the South by selling the raw, unprocessed timber to Southern European countries. Smallholding was considered superfluous and collapsed in a few decades. All he wanted to do was to run a farm, but that was taken from him. So in 1968, after the world he wanted to live in and be respected by just disappeared. He felt there wasn’t room for him anymore, so he hung himself” - David Sandström (Paraphrased)

Vijay Iyer live at the Purcell Room, South Bank with special guest Talvin Singh on tabla. Support from Lars Danielsson & Leszek Możdżer. Catch Vijay Iyer and Lars Danielsson & Leszek Możdżer on Spotify.
Wow! Great show! Vijay Iyer put on a fabulous set despite people walking out after each song… Seriously, WTF!?! Talvin Singh joined Vijay on tabla for the last two tracks. The last of which, a Stevie Wonder cover, was truly exemplary. Such synergy! I was fortunate enough to photograph them during the soundcheck - which was the first time they had ever played together, but you would never have known! I can’t wait to see Vijay return someday with a trio or quartet. He really shines when playing with others. That’s not to say that his solo work is anything to sneeze at. On the contrary, it was beyond impressive!
Support came from a dynamic, expressive duo: Leszek Możdżer (Pole) & Lars Danielsson (Swede). Fantastic stuff. They earned the encore! Lars must be one of the most expressive double bassists I’ve ever seen. They had a lot of fun feeding off each other. Tight. Możdżer appears to be somewhat of a celebrity - signing autographs with Polish expats after the show…
“Ashes and Snow” by Gregory Colbert. Well crafted and composed photographic compositions of man with animal

P.S. No idea what the reference is to, as I wasn’t all that much of a gamer…
“the CLOUD” observation deck. Proposal for the London 2012 Olympics. What are the chances they’ll actually allow cycling?
“The CLOUD proposes an entirely new form of observation deck, connecting visitors to both the whole of London and the whole of the world, immersing them in euphoric gusts of weather and digital data. Each individual footstep on the ascent to the CLOUD participates in a vast collective energy-harvesting effort. Everyone around the world can contribute to the Cloud - whether by visiting or by sponsoring an LED, helping to keep the London lamp aflame”
I went to an Eigenharp demonstration. Very slick and expressive if not overly geeky. I actually only wanted to see them demo the lovely little Pico. Bizarrely they refused, even when asked directly! I did get to handle one though… I think it could be pretty useful and intend on getting one someday… But not any time soon as I’ve just picked up a Tenori-On!
Here’s a video clip of the founder talking about the Pico:
